AICTE Approval for BBA, BCA Seen as Catalyst for ..!

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will regulate BBA, BBM, BMS, and BCA courses, requiring colleges to reapply for approval.

The AICTE will regulate BBA, BBM, BMS, and BCA courses. The colleges that offer these courses will need to reapply for AICTE clearance to continue providing them. The change will allow business schools that only provide PGDMs and engineering institutions that solely offer technical courses to become interdisciplinary. Experts, on the other hand, are concerned about a rise in regulatory barriers and financial constraints on smaller institutes.

The AICTE has placed the Undergraduate Programmes/Courses in Computer Applications and Management under its umbrella to ensure coordinated growth in technical and management education. It has also made hibernation available for universities wanting to upgrade/revamp their facilities.

The AICTE is regulating undergraduate Management and Computer Science courses to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and require curriculum revision. The committee will soon submit the model curricula for BBA and BCA programs.

Industry professionals are involved in creating the new curriculum for these programmes, which will include courses on new and emerging technologies, major, minor courses, multiple entry and exit options, and multidisciplinary courses.

Internships will be an integral part of the model curricula at the UG level, and colleges that already offer the programs can continue with their existing affiliation after acquiring AICTE approval by submitting data on admissions, results, number of seats, details of faculty, and infrastructure. AICTE recognition will help colleges avail benefits such as scholarships, support for student clubs, and access to conferences.

One of the objectives for AICTE is to make single-discipline institutions offering PGDM, Engineering, Design, and Hospitality programs acquire a diverse approach. This will open more avenues for financially sound institutions but may be burdensome for smaller institutions charging nominal tuition fees.

The financial burden will eventually pass over to students. However, this will help many quality institutions offering PGDM and Engineering programs become NEP 2020 compliant without losing their autonomy or scaling up to become universities.

AICTE approval may lead to additional financial burden, bureaucratic hurdles, and confusion among faculty and students due to variance between state university rules and AICTE regulations.

State universities often cap the fee for different courses, so arts and science colleges may feel the pinch. Some states perceive this as an attempt by the central government to exert influence in an area traditionally under the purview of state universities, contradicting the collaborative nature of education on the concurrent list of both the Centre and states.
