Education Minister Reports 31% Surge in Girl Student Enrollment Since 2014-15

Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education, informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led administration at the Centre was responsible for a 31% increase in enrolment among females in schools between 2014-15.

There are more than 300 million pupils in India--260 million in grades 0-12th and 40 million in higher education institutions--yet just a small percentage of them go out to study, Pradhan said in response to supplemental questions from MPs during question hour.

He said that the number of students pursuing higher education had grown by 20-25% under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.

The figure for girls belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) stood at 50%. The enrolment growth rate for SC and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students was 44% and 65%, respectively, Pradhan said,

Replying to supplementary queries of MPs during the question hour.

He also said that there has been a growth of students from Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and a further 45% increase of female students from the Muslim minority in schools.

This demonstrates that, as a result of the government's measures, students have begun to study more, according to Pradhan, who added that the New Education Policy will help India reach new heights in the next three years.

According to the education minister, India's essence is alive via its languages, which is why the government has chosen to enhance the teaching of Indian languages.

According to the revised curricular framework, all students in classes 11 and 12 are now required to study a minimum of two languages, one of which must be an Indian language.

According to Pradhan, The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken out a circular that materials for teaching and learning 20 Indian civil languages be made available in schools.
