Odisha adopts the New Education Policy (NEP) in higher education, launching a flexible four-year degree program with credit options in skill development and int
The Odisha government has chosen to implement the New Education Policy (NEP) in the state’s higher education system. Implementation began during the current school year. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Mahji informed the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) of the NEP’s launch earlier this week. The NEP, which includes a new curriculum, will be implemented in all government universities and affiliated institutions within the Higher Education Department.
According to the new policy, a four-year graduate programme will replace the conventional three-year course. Students can achieve a certificate, diploma, degree, or honours degree by completing each year of the four-year program.
According to the state government’s announcement, a credit system has been formed in accordance with the University Grants Commission guidance.
This structure enables students to earn credits by engaging in skill development, internships, community service, extracurricular activities, and NCC and NSS activity.
This project is part of a bigger goal to promote experiential learning and better prepare students for professional positions.
This framework, which aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP), gives students more freedom in their academic paths by providing a seven-year window to finish their degrees with numerous entrance and departure points.
This adaptable strategy aims to make higher education more accessible, self-sufficient, and research-oriented, with a focus on practical learning and industry-relevant skills.
In response to these educational reforms, new courses have been developed, focusing on employability and meeting industry standards. These courses include 112 multidisciplinary subjects, 14 vocational paths, and 84 skill-based courses, spanning 40 core undergraduate subjects to cater to evolving market demands.
For school-level reforms, a task force led by the Deputy Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary (DC-cum-ACS) has been established.
This team, which includes experts from organizations like UNICEF, is tasked with guiding the implementation of NEP.
