UGC allows central universities to conduct their own entrance exams for UG and PG programs if seats remain vacant after CUET counselling, ensuring better resour
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced that central universities can conduct their own entrance exams for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes if seats remain vacant after the Common Entrance University Test (CUET) admission counseling.
The Commission said that vacant seats after multiple rounds of counseling not only lead to inefficient use of resources in central universities but also deny numerous prospective students the chance to obtain higher education. To address this issue, it has released Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which will help central universities to fill the vacant seats.
According to the SOP, candidates who had appeared for CUET but had not registered for a respective university may also be considered to sit for the entrance exam conducted by the university.
UGC chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar said, “Seats remain vacant in some central universities even after three or four rounds of counseling. To keep the seats vacant for an entire academic year is not only a waste of resources but also results in denial of quality higher education to many students who aspire to pursue higher studies in central universities.”
He added, "Hence, to facilitate the universities to fill up their vacant seats, SOPs have been formulated. Students who appeared in CUET, but may or may not have applied to the respective university for the courses or programmes earlier may also be considered."
