Canadian University Launches Course on Taylor Swift

The University of Guelph in Canada is set to launch a course examining Taylor Swift’s cultural impact. Starting in January 2025, the course, part of the ‘Icons of Music’ op-ed programme, will involve 600 students studying pop music’s connection to art, literature, sexuality, and religion.

The course, co-designed by Alyssa Woods and Associate Professor Robert Michael Edwards, will focus on Swift’s impact on pop culture, including her influence on fan culture, fashion trends, and local economies through her concert tours.

The course will also cover Swift’s Canadian leg of her The Eras Tour, including her performances in Toronto and Vancouver. The course has already reached full capacity for its virtual program, but discussions about a summer term are ongoing.

Woods believes that students can apply the skills learned in the 12-week course to other analytics contexts and suggests future iterations may focus on other major artists based on evolving trends.

Several universities have embraced music icons in academia. Harvard introduced a course on Taylor Swift, South Carolina examined Lady Gaga’s artistry, Ohio State studied The Beatles, and Yale recently announced a course on Beyoncé.
