CBSE cross-checks Class 12 answer sheets through senior examiners to ensure accurate and fair marking.
CBSE 12th OSM System: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has explained the full process of its newly introduced On-Screen Marking system used for evaluating Class 12 board exam answer sheets in 2026.
The clarification comes after several students and parents raised concerns on social media regarding lower-than-expected marks after the declaration of CBSE Class 12 results.
According to the board, the new digital evaluation process has been introduced to make checking more secure, transparent and accurate while reducing human errors during marking and result preparation.
How CBSE Evaluated Answer Sheets
CBSE said the process started with the collection and coding of answer sheets to keep students’ identities confidential. The copies were then scanned using high-quality scanners before being uploaded to the digital evaluation system.
After scanning, answer sheets went through a quality check. If any scanned copy was unclear, it was scanned again to avoid mistakes during evaluation.
The board also said scanned answer sheets were digitally sent to different regions outside the student’s exam region to maintain secrecy and fairness in checking.
Online Evaluation by Teachers
Under the On-Screen Marking system, teachers checked answer sheets digitally instead of using physical copies. Evaluators awarded marks directly through the online portal.
CBSE stated that teachers could report any issue in a scanned answer sheet during checking, after which corrective action was taken before evaluation continued.
Once the checking process was completed, answer sheets were cross-verified by Assistant Head Examiners and Head Examiners to maintain consistency and accuracy in marking.
Training Given Before Implementation
Before launching the new system, CBSE conducted training sessions and trial runs for teachers. A dry run was organised in January 2026 in selected schools with around 100 teachers participating.
The board also held webinars and practice sessions where teachers learned how to use the digital evaluation platform. Teachers were later given access to previous years’ answer sheets for practice before the actual evaluation started on March 7, 2026.
CBSE Defends New Evaluation Method
CBSE has said the On-Screen Marking system helps reduce totalling mistakes, improves fairness in checking and speeds up the result process.
However, after the Class 12 results were announced, many students and parents claimed online that they expected higher marks and questioned the new evaluation process. Despite the criticism, CBSE has maintained that the system is designed to ensure more reliable and error-free assessment.
