The Central Board of Secondary Education will phase-wise assess and certify 10,000 counselors; first batch began February 2026.
The Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced an Online Remote Invigilation Examination (proctored assessment) for school counsellors to strengthen student support systems and improve the quality of counselling services.
According to an official notification issued on March 20, 2026, the initiative will be rolled out in phases to assess and certify around 10,000 counselling and wellness teachers (socio-emotional counsellors) across CBSE-affiliated schools. The first batch of assessments began in February 2026.
The board stated that the evaluation will go beyond traditional exams, focusing on counsellors’ practical skills, ethical understanding, and ability to support students’ mental well-being. The test will be conducted on an AI-enabled platform, DIGI-EXAM, ensuring a secure, transparent, and standardised process.
CBSE said the move aims to create a “future-ready assessment ecosystem” with emphasis on secure digital delivery, fairness in evaluation, and wider accessibility through remote participation. The initiative also aligns with national digital education goals and global best practices.
Schools have been instructed to ensure that their counsellors participate in the assessment when nominated by the board. These nominations will be based on data uploaded on the OASIS portal, and schools have been advised to keep counsellor details updated.
Additionally, reports suggest that CBSE has directed all affiliated schools to implement menstrual hygiene measures. This follows a recent order by the Supreme Court of India, which emphasised dignified menstrual health as a fundamental part of the right to life.
