CSIR-NPL Hosts International Workshop on Climate Change Technologies

The CSIR-NPL in New Delhi hosts an international workshop discussing advanced materials and net zero technologies to combat climate change.

The National Measurement Institute (NMI) of India is located in the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL), New Delhi. From October 9–10, 2023, CSIR-NPL will host an international workshop on advanced materials challenges and the need for standardisation in net zero technologies. Globally, there is a great deal of concern about climate change, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has suggested that greenhouse gas emissions be reduced to zero by the year 2050.

In order to discuss the cutting-edge materials, technologies, and standards being developed globally to achieve the net zero target and the challenges therein to combat with global climate change, this workshop aims to bring national and international experts and researchers together on the same platform.

Eminent scientists and researchers from all over the world are attending this workshop and contributing their knowledge in the fields of energy production, energy storage, energy efficient technologies, and circular economy for sustainable development.

Prof. Venu Gopal Achanta, Director of CSIR-NPL, gave a welcome speech to kick off the programme. Prof. Achanta extended a warm welcome to everyone and provided an overview of the workshop. In order to reach the net zero goal, he emphasised the role played by CSIR labs in the creation of a variety of cutting-edge materials and technologies. He also noted that the workshop will be followed by the 48th meeting of the VAMAS steering committee, which will take place at CSIR-NPL on October 11 and 12, 2023.

Following Prof. Achanta's speech, Prof. Fernando Castro, VAMAS Chair, NPL-UK, addressed the audience and discussed the conception of the Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS), as well as its role in promoting global trade and standardising advanced materials. 

In order to reduce the disastrous effects of climate change, he emphasised the urgent need for net zero technologies. He talked about the significance of materials metrology, the need for precise measurements, and the requirement for standard organisations to set norms for novel materials.

The chief guest of the function Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Secretary DSIR and Director General CSIR, addressed the gathering and mentioned about the need of advanced materials for net zero technologies. She mentioned that we need to work collectively to develop advanced materials and technologies for energy generation and storage. She mentioned the importance of Zero for sustainable development. She said net zero is not a dream but has to be the mandate of the globe. 

She mentioned that advanced materials have lots of challenges and we need to take those challenges as opportunities to shape our future through a time bound process. She said we have to be very careful and justify our actions for the protection of our mother nature through collective efforts. She also mentioned the role of CSIR-NPL in standardization and development of advanced materials and technologies for net zero emission.

Dr. S. R. Dhakate, Chief Scientist CSIR-NPL, gave the closing remarks to the inaugural programme.

Following the programme, distinguished speakers from several nations presented scientific seminars on Materials for Energy Generation, Energy Storage, and Carbon Capture. The speakers discussed their research endeavours and contributions to the creation of cutting-edge materials and technology for achieving net zero emissions.
