The Centre clarified to the Delhi High Court that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) isn't mandatory for central universities.

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET), a nationwide entrance exam that offers admission to a variety of UG, PG, and Ph.D. programmes, has not been made mandatory for central universities, according to the Centre, which has told the Delhi High Court.

The argument was stated in a petition against Delhi University (DU)'s intention to give admission in its five-year integrated legal programmes based on the results of the Common Legal Admission Test (CLAT UG) 2023 before a division bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Narula.


The Central Government Standing Counsel (CGSC) for the Union of India has expressly indicated that the Common University Entrance Test is not essential for central universities and that they enjoy autonomy in the area of admission, the bench remarked in its judgment of August 25. The National Education Policy, 2020 is relied upon to highlight the academic and administrative autonomy of higher education institutions.
