Multiple states declare school holidays from December 8 to 14 amid cold rain strikes and elections.
Starting December 8 through December 14, various states in India have announced extended school holidays across different regions, each citing unique reasons like weather, strikes or elections.
In the northern region of Jammu & Kashmir especially in hilly zones schools will remain closed due to a severe cold wave, dense fog and early snowfall. For students in pre-primary to Class 8, the winter vacation stretches until February 28, 2026; for Classes 9 to 12, holidays begin from December 11.
In Kerala, classes are suspended on December 9 and 11 owing to local body elections, affecting both government and private schools statewide.
Across southern coastal regions including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh the arrival of Cyclone Ditwah has disrupted regular school schedules. Heavy rainfall and flooding threats have prompted district administrations to announce potential closures, urging parents to confirm with their schools before sending children out.
Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, a statewide teachers’ strike has brought teaching to a halt across thousands of schools, especially affecting Classes 9 and 10. In many districts, academic activities remain suspended with the disruption likely to continue into next week unless resolved soon.
These closures, though inconvenient for some, bring a temporary relief for students and parents coping with harsh weather, safety concerns or administrative disruptions. For all affected students, it means an unexpected break one that could be used wisely for revision, rest or recharge.
