Students warned nine unrecognised institutions in Delhi declared fake by UGC.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sounded a loud alarm for students in Delhi after identifying 22 fake universities across India, of which nine are based in the capital.
In Delhi, institutions such as the Institute of Management and Engineering, Kotla Mubarakpur have been specifically named for offering degrees without recognition under the UGC Act, 1956. The university regulator confirmed that this institute is neither established under any Central or State act nor recognised under Sections 2(f) or 3, rendering its qualifications invalid for both higher studies and professional careers.
For students and parents in Delhi, this is a wake-up call. The high concentration of fake institutions in the city driven in part by its large aspirational student population and confusing naming of colleges means it’s no longer enough to rely on glossy brochures or big promises.
Here’s how to check if a college is legitimate:
⦁ Visit the UGC’s official website and confirm if the institution appears in its list of recognised universities.
⦁ For professional courses (engineering, management, pharmacy etc.), check whether relevant councils (e.g., All India Council for Technical Education for engineering) have given approval.
⦁ Verify that the institution’s certificate can be validated via the national digital platform as required under India’s education regulations.
In Delhi’s fiercely competitive education landscape, investing time in verification now could prevent years of regret later.
