In a decision that may surprise many, the Delhi High Court has overturned a Central Information Commission (CIC) order demanding the disclosure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bachelor’s degree from Delhi University. The court’s ruling point on a simple yet powerful recognition: academic records, including marks and degrees, are “personal information” and not automatically open to public scrutiny under the RTI Act.

The university had long argued that such sensitive student data shouldn’t be exposed merely because of public curiosity and the court agreed. Justice Sachin Datta emphasized that there was no overriding public interest in unveiling these credentials, especially when they don’t directly affect PM Modi’s ability to serve.

Interestingly, the University of Delhi offered the court to show the transcript, but refused to provide it to strangers under RTI. This subtle attitude says a lot - it is one thing to promote rigging, but protecting personal privacy is absolutely another.

This is not only the victory of any one person, but it is a re -confirmation that the protection of personal data is the right of everyone, no matter how big his public identity is. At a time when every aspect of the life of public celebrities is often closely investigated, this order draws a welcome limit, reminding us that privacy is no privilege but a right.
