Teachers association urges Delhi University to withdraw protest ban affecting campus events.
Teachers at one of India’s most prominent universities have appealed to the administration to reconsider a sweeping one month ban on protests and public gatherings across campus. The Delhi University Teachers Association has formally written to university authorities, asking them to withdraw the restriction, calling it an excessive step that disrupts academic and cultural life.
The restriction applies to public meetings, demonstrations, and processions throughout university grounds for thirty days. According to university officials, the measure was introduced after recent tensions between student groups and concerns about maintaining safety and order on campus. Administrators stated that the intention behind the decision was to prevent escalation and ensure a peaceful environment for students and staff.
However, members of the teachers association argue that such a broad ban has never been imposed in the university’s history. They believe it goes beyond addressing security concerns and instead limits legitimate and peaceful expression. Faculty members have stressed that dialogue, debate, and collective engagement are central to the spirit of a university.
A major concern raised by the association is the impact on longstanding cultural and social events scheduled during this period. Several programs, including seasonal celebrations, festivals, awareness drives, and community gatherings, have reportedly been postponed or cancelled. Students and faculty have described these interruptions as disappointing, noting that such events are an important part of campus tradition and student engagement.
While acknowledging that safety must remain a priority, teachers have urged the administration to explore alternative solutions. Suggestions include better coordination, clearer guidelines for gatherings, and structured supervision rather than a complete halt on all forms of assembly.
Some individual colleges have also deferred planned activities, further fueling debate about the long term implications of the ban on campus life. Faculty leaders have expressed hope that university authorities will respond constructively and restore opportunities for peaceful engagement.
The situation highlights the delicate balance universities must maintain between ensuring safety and upholding the democratic values of expression and participation that form the foundation of academic institutions.
