France Takes Action Against Screen Addiction

Excessive screen time has emerged as a serious health worry in our digital age, particularly for young teens. It’s really impeding their capacity to grow physically, maintain mental stability, and spend time outside. Governments and school agencies worldwide are figuring out how to address this worldwide issue.

Workshops on screen time reduction are one of the other programs meant to assist individuals in overcoming their addiction to screens. This is demonstrated by the emergence of phrases like “digital detox,” “screen fast,” “unplugging,” and “disconnecting from the digital realm.” These programs demonstrate how the need of striking a balance between technology and a healthy lifestyle is becoming increasingly apparent. France will now forbid pupils under the age of fifteen from using cellphones in class, aiming to provide them with a “digital pause.”

According to a release by the French government, the ban covers the use of mobile phones and any other electronic communications terminal equipment (tablets or smart watches, for example) within schools and colleges.

The law also allows the board of directors of high schools to introduce, in the internal regulations, a ban on the use of these devices by high school students. This ban is valid during school and extracurricular time. It is also effective during all school activities organized outside the school or educational establishment.

The law permits students with disabilities or disabling health conditions to use medical devices associated with communication equipment, such as devices for managing blood sugar levels. Conditional prohibitions are allowed under specific circumstances, such as educational uses and places, where internal regulations expressly authorize mobile phone use by students. These conditions are cumulative, requiring specific circumstances and places.
