The GATE 2026 official portal gate2026.iitg.ac.in has just been launched by IIT Guwahati, the organising institute. Registration opens on August 25, 2025 and remains open until September 25 for regular applicants; the extended window with late fee ends October 6.
GATE 2026 exams are tentatively scheduled for four dates: February 7, 8, 14 and 15, 2026. Results are expected by March 19, 2026. Candidates can apply for one or two papers from the 30 available, including the newly introduced Energy Science paper under Engineering Sciences.
Eligibility for GATE 2026 includes students in the third year or higher of undergraduate studies, or those who already hold degrees in engineering, technology, architecture, science, arts, or commerce. Certifications recognized by MoE/AICTE/UGC/UPSC are also eligible.
Examination format follows the standard structure: a 3 hour computer based test with 65 questions worth 100 marks. General Aptitude carries 15 marks; the remaining marks cover subject specific content. Question types include MCQs, MSQs, and NATs, with negative marking only on MCQs.
The application fee is ₹1800 per paper (₹900 for SC/ST/Female/PwD) during the regular window; with late fee, it goes up (₹2300 or ₹1400 respectively).
To avoid confusion, remember:
• Only register through the official portal at gate2026.iitg.ac.in.
• Use a single application form even if applying for two papers.
• Be prepared with scanned documents and eligibility proof.
• Read the official notification carefully when it's released in early August to stay updated.
With preparation and attention to these important dates, your GATE 2026 application process will be smoother and more organised.
