New India RISE fellowship supports early-career women scientists through research training, mentorship, and leadership development opportunities.
A significant new fellowship program aimed at strengthening the role of women scientists in India’s research ecosystem has been launched at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. The India RISE Fellowship program, which stands for Research and Innovation STEMM Empowerment, marks an important step toward supporting early-career women researchers working in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine fields.
The fellowship has been designed to address long-standing challenges faced by women in scientific careers, particularly during the early professional stages. By offering structured mentorship, research support and leadership training, the initiative seeks to create a more inclusive and sustainable academic environment.
The one-year, part-time fellowship allows participants to continue their ongoing research at their respective institutions. This flexible structure ensures that fellows are not required to pause their professional responsibilities while gaining access to advanced learning opportunities. Alongside research activities, participants engage in leadership development programs, skill-building workshops and collaborative projects.
The first cohort of the fellowship includes 41 women scientists representing 16 states and union territories across the country. These fellows come from more than 30 leading research institutions, including major universities, medical institutes and national research centres. The wide representation highlights the program’s commitment to encouraging scientific talent from diverse geographic and institutional backgrounds.
To be eligible, applicants must hold a PhD or an equivalent postgraduate professional degree earned within the past seven years. Candidates are also expected to demonstrate a strong interest in contributing to health, science and innovation research in India. Each fellow works under the guidance of a designated research advisor from their home institution, ensuring academic continuity and focused mentorship throughout the fellowship period.
Beyond laboratory research, the program places strong emphasis on leadership growth. Fellows participate in structured training sessions focused on communication, project management, grant writing and career planning. Peer learning circles further encourage collaboration and shared problem-solving among participants.
The fellowship also aims to strengthen links between academic research and broader sectors such as policy development, public health and industry innovation. By encouraging interdisciplinary engagement, the program helps researchers understand how scientific work can translate into real-world impact.
Initiatives like India RISE reflect a growing awareness that increasing women’s participation in science requires more than academic excellence alone. Targeted mentorship, institutional support and leadership exposure are essential for narrowing gender gaps and unlocking the full potential of India’s research community. Through sustained investment in women scientists, such programs contribute to a more balanced and innovative scientific future.
