South Korean author Han Kang has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature, citing her “intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.” The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences issued the statement, which highlighted Kang’s significant contributions to current literature.
Kang was born in 1970 in Gwangju, South Korea, and relocated to Seoul with her family when she was nine years old. She comes from a literary family, with her father a well-known novelist who impacted her early artistic aspirations. The Nobel committee remarked that, in addition to writing, Kang has spent a large amount of time on art and music, both of which are recurring themes in her work.
Since its inception in 1901, the Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded 116 times to 120 laureates. This year’s recognition adds another prominent voice to that distinguished list.
