Delhi University students protest principal’s son wedding alleging misuse of public campus facilities.
Hansraj Students Protest

Tension unfolded at Hansraj College, part of Delhi University, after news spread that the principal’s son’s wedding was scheduled to be held inside the campus premises. What began as a circulating invitation card soon turned into a full scale student protest, with many questioning whether public educational spaces should be used for private celebrations.

Students alleged that the college sports ground and certain hostel areas were being prepared for the wedding ceremony. Decorations, restricted entry zones and arrangements reportedly led to disruption of routine student activities. Around fifty students gathered to express their concern, arguing that campus facilities are meant for academic and extracurricular use, not personal family functions.

One major point of anger was the disruption of the annual Khelo Hansraj sports festival. The event, which was scheduled to run for several weeks, reportedly faced interruption when students were informed that the ground would not be available for a few days due to the wedding preparations. Many participants felt frustrated, saying that they were not given sufficient notice and that their practices and matches were suddenly cancelled.

Students also raised questions about the use of hostel spaces. Some claimed that areas earlier declared unsuitable for student residence appeared to be prepared for accommodating wedding guests. This, according to protesters, showed inconsistency in administrative decisions. They argued that if certain facilities are considered unfit for students, they should not be used for private events either.

In response, the college administration reportedly assured students that no disciplinary action would be taken against those who protested. It was also clarified that arrangements would follow campus rules and that guest accommodation would be managed appropriately.

Despite the clarification, the incident has sparked a larger debate about fairness and transparency in educational institutions. Students feel that decisions affecting campus life should involve proper communication and equal consideration. The episode has left many wondering where to draw the line between administrative discretion and accountability within public universities.

The discussions are likely to continue even after the wedding celebrations conclude, as students seek clearer policies to prevent similar controversies in the future.
