IIT Bombay Introduces New Undergraduate Programme for 2024

The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) has launched a new BTech degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) this academic year. The course, which combines applied mathematics, computing, technology, and management, aims to solve real-world problems using effective decision-making models.

This BTech program, which includes the main disciplines of Operations Research and Industrial Engineering, is perfect for students who are interested in data science, computing, and decision analysis.

Operations research (OR) investigates complex human-technical systems and their structures, using mathematical and decision models such as optimization, simulation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to handle difficulties of planning, scheduling, and control in a variety of domains.

Industrial Engineering (IE) focuses on the design, analysis, improvement, and management of industrial and service systems to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness sustainably. The tools and concepts from OR are integral to this discipline.

Program Structure

  • Provides a solid foundation in applied mathematics and computing.
  • Includes core courses in basic sciences, humanities and social sciences, and engineering and technology.
  • Courses include "Introduction to IE and OR" (IE101) in the first semester, probability and statistics, optimization, data structures and algorithms, control systems, artificial intelligence/machine learning, stochastic processes, simulation, risk and uncertainty, industrial systems, operations analysis, and logistics and supply chain management.
  • Includes six core labs: four computational labs focusing on algorithms and programming, optimisation, data analytics and AI/ML, and simulation; two hardware labs dedicated to industrial engineering and digital enterprise systems.
  • Students can explore additional subjects through department and STEM electives and may pursue an Honors degree in IEOR. Minors in other disciplines are also available.

Career Prospects

The IEOR program offers graduates diverse career prospects in various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, business analytics, e-commerce, agriculture, financial services, healthcare, security, and information and telecommunications. It aligns with India's initiatives like Make in India, Gati Shakti, and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Graduates are highly valued in industries, technology innovation centers, research labs, and academia. They excel in data science roles and prepare for advanced studies at top global institutions.
