A partnership between NYU Tandon School of Engineering and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has been announced to pursue seven research initiatives. Originally established in September 2023, this alliance represents a major advancement in the domains of biotechnology, robotics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and wireless communications.

The cooperation came about as a result of the Association of American Universities' advocacy for international partnerships and US President Joe Biden's visit to the G20 Summit in New Delhi.

President Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized their support for this scholarly collaboration in a joint statement, stressing its significance for their respective countries.

Professor Bushra Ateeq, Dean of International Relations at IIT Kanpur, said, "International academic partnership enhances the diversity of ideas, fosters synergies, and drives collective efforts to tackle scientific challenges. Our partnership with NYU is set to foster innovation and develop solutions with global impact."

Linda Ng Boyle, Vice Dean for Research at NYU Tandon, added, "Building academic ties across borders is essential for driving scientific breakthroughs. Our collaboration with IIT Kanpur aims to deliver technological innovations that make our world safer, cleaner, and healthier."

The seven joint research projects are:

  • Engineering Multivalent Assembled Protein To Mimic Hypoxia-Inducible Factor
  • Enhancing Quadruped Robot Motion: A Reinforcement Learning Approach
  • High-Resolution Neural Interface SoC with Meta-Structure-Enhanced Wireless Power Transmission
  • Leveraging Modern Vision-Language Models For Traffic Camera Scene Understanding
  • Smart Wireless EV Charging Station
  • Unconventional Physically Unclonable Functions For Micro-fluidics And Supply Chain Fingerprinting
  • Programmable Cryptographic Processing Units To Enable Secure, Private, And Quantum-Proof Computing

The new collaboration demonstrates NYU's dedication to international innovation and comes after Tandon's 2022 agreement with KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology).

Both of these universities provide funding for these research programs, with additional assistance from the NYU Center for Cybersecurity and the NYU Tandon Center for Advanced Technology in Telecommunications.
