IIT Kanpur newly launched flexible online PG programmes open advanced learning to professionals nationwide.
In a bold move to widen access and modernise higher education, IIT Kanpur has announced the launch of fully online postgraduate programmes including MTech, MSc, and postgraduate diplomas. These have been developed to mirror the content, structure and evaluation of the institute’s on-campus offerings meaning students anywhere in India (and abroad) could now tap into an “IIT-standard” curriculum without having to relocate.
The university emphasises that at least 85 % of all course material for these online degrees has been developed and delivered by IIT Kanpur’s faculty and long-term visiting faculty, ensuring that the academic rigour remains intact. To maintain credibility and fairness, the institute is also mandating proctored examinations in-person at authorised centres within India, or via online proctoring for international learners which account for at least 50 % of the total grade weight.
Since the hands-on laboratory component is often a barrier in fully online formats, IIT Kanpur has introduced virtual labs, digital simulations and project-based coursework that approximate real-world experimentation. For those courses that still require physical lab experience, the institute is exploring hybrid models such as short campus residencies or partnerships with regional institutions allowing working professionals to continue their careers while engaging in advanced study.
Applications are already open: candidates via entrance test must apply by November 16 2025, while those exempt from the test have until December 2 2025. The inaugural batch for this January 2026 intake is being offered as a special “inaugural batch” offer
