IIT Madras Clarifies Reports: 45% Graduates Not Unplaced

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, today confirmed that placements are still happening at IIT Madras and the final placement data would be available by the end of July 2024, following convocation only, refuting rumours claiming over 45 percent of the institute's students are still unplaced.

"Placements are still ongoing at IIT Madras. Students have varied interests - some aim for higher studies, others aspire to start their own ventures and explore entrepreneurship, while some plan to appear for competitive exams like civil services. They take time to make these decisions. The placement data will be available at the end of July 2024, after convocation," said IIT Madras in a statement to India Today.

The placement news of IIT Madras garnered attention when Dheeraj Singh, an IIT Kanpur alumnus, revealed the data based on the RTI filed by him recently.

Singh's analysis suggests that this year, the IITs could see a rise in the number of unplaced students compared to previous years. He derived these findings from the RTI data he obtained.

In the placement report for the graduating class of 2024, 2,100 students signed up for placement opportunities. Of these, 1,150 students have successfully secured placements in either Phase 1 or Phase 2, leaving 950 students still awaiting job offers.

Out of these, Singh has predicted that following the current placement trend, approximately 45.2 percent of registered students might not get placed.

However, IIT Madras has refuted such claims and stated that the final placement data will only be available at the end of July 2024, after the convocation.
