IIT Madras NPTEL Translates Thousands of Technical Courses into Regional Languages

IIT Madras NPTEL has translated up to 207 technical courses into Hindi, including 'Introduction to the Internet of Things'. The translation process involves 1,029 Hindi translators and 139 quality controllers (QCs). NPTEL has also released 199 e-books in Hindi on its website, increasing access to educational resources in the language. Additionally, 1,200 hours of video content are available in Hindi to supplement the learning experience of Hindi-speaking students.

NPTEL has emphasized key subjects such as computer science, social sciences, and electrical engineering. Courses like 'The Joy of Computing using Python' have received excellent comments from course participants. NPTEL is also expanding its translation efforts, translating courses like 'Introduction to Machine Learning' into Hindi using machine learning technologies and voiceovers for improved accessibility.

NPTEL has translated its courses into 11 languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu. The aim is to help learners who completed their schooling in regional languages and are transitioning to English for technical education.

NPTEL, a joint venture between IITs and IISc, is funded by the Ministry of Education (MoE) and launched in 2003. It offers hundreds of courses for certification every semester across 22 disciplines. Translated materials undergo rigorous review by Quality Control (QC) experts and are made available on the SWAMYAM and NPTEL websites in various formats, including PDF transcripts, e-books, subtitles, scrolling text, and audio formats. Technical terminology is retained in English to ensure accuracy and enhance the overall learning experience.

Details and access to the translated courses can be obtained from https://nptel.ac.in/translation
