The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has partnered with the University of Tours in France to provide a course on 'Sustainable Bio-Manufacturing of High-Value Phytochemicals'.

This course is being provided as part of the 'Global Initiative of Academic Networks' (GIAN) programme, which aims to enhance collaboration with international universities.

The course aligns with the vision of the Government of India's recently announced 'BioE3' Policy, which seeks to promote and ease large-scale production of bio-products for sustainable development through high-performance biomanufacturing.

The course aims to introduce state-of-the-art technologies for sustainable production of high-value plant metabolites, such as drugs and cosmetics, using plant and microbial cell technology called 'cell factory'. Professor Smita Srivastava from IIT Madras emphasizes the need for such courses to tap into India's growing demand for plant-based natural products and phytochemicals. He emphasizes the importance of capacity building, innovation, and entrepreneurship in this specialized domain.

The course also aims to create awareness among researchers, industry professionals, and entrepreneurs to develop sustainable technologies for socio-economical impact. Professor Nathalie Giglioli-Guivarc'h from the University of Tours highlights the need for developing technologies for producing active ingredients of plant origin, such as anticancer drugs, as an alternative to growing plants in fields.

The course aims to lay the foundation for emerging biotechnologies capable of meeting these challenges and demonstrate the power of international cooperation in developing such projects. The Government of India has approved the 'Global Initiative of Academic Networks' (GIAN) in Higher Education to tap the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs internationally.

About The Course

The course deals with sustainable manufacturing of high-value plant-derived natural products using plant and microbial bio-factories, which can also conserve nature while fulfilling the increasing market demand for phytochemicals for various commercial applications.

This course is also open for those outside IIT Madras. Researchers, industry professionals, students (BTech, MTech, MSc, PhD) in plant biotechnology/bioprocess Engineering/biotechnology and faculty from recognised institutions can apply. Applicants are expected to have a basic knowledge of plant cell and microbial technology and fermentation.

There will be 30 seats available for in-person participation. Registration for the course is open till November 22, 2024. The course will be taught from 2nd to 14th December 2024. Further details can be obtained from the following link - https://shorturl.at/23b9H.

It will address the need for fundamental research on the identification of biosynthetic pathways and modern approaches that allow their acceleration as well as new developments in plant biotechnology approaches of rationally integrating bioprocess and metabolic engineering principles to maximize the yield of high-value phytochemicals from plant and yeast cell bio factories for economic feasibility in these bioprocesses.
