The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has taken an important step toward promoting inclusive education and student wellbeing through two major initiatives on its campus. The institute announced a new scholarship program aimed at supporting underprivileged students and also laid the foundation stone for a Centre of Yogic Sciences and Holistic Development. Together, these initiatives highlight the institute’s commitment to academic excellence along with physical and mental wellbeing.

The newly introduced Dr Ishan Shivanand Scholarship is designed to provide full financial support to students from economically weaker backgrounds. Under this scheme, ten students will be selected, including five undergraduate and five postgraduate students. The scholarship aims to reduce financial pressure on deserving students, allowing them to focus fully on their studies and personal development without worrying about tuition and related expenses.

Alongside the scholarship announcement, IIT Ropar marked a significant milestone in its campus development by initiating the construction of the Centre of Yogic Sciences and Holistic Development. This centre is envisioned as a dedicated space where traditional yogic practices will be integrated with modern scientific understanding to promote overall wellbeing among students, faculty, and staff.

The centre is expected to offer a variety of programs such as yoga sessions, meditation practices, mindfulness activities, aerobic exercises, and wellness workshops. These initiatives are intended to help students manage stress, improve physical fitness, and maintain mental balance. In today’s highly competitive academic environment, such support systems are increasingly seen as essential for long term success and personal growth.

During the foundation ceremony, institute leaders emphasized the importance of nurturing both the mind and the body. They noted that academic achievement alone is not enough and must be supported by emotional resilience and physical health. This balanced approach is particularly important as students often face intense pressure related to performance, competition, and future career expectations.

The Centre of Yogic Sciences will also focus on research and outreach activities aimed at exploring how traditional wellness practices can benefit modern lifestyles. The knowledge generated through these efforts may extend beyond the campus and contribute to broader discussions on health and wellbeing in society.

Students and faculty have welcomed both initiatives, noting that the scholarship program will create opportunities for talented individuals who might otherwise struggle to afford quality education. At the same time, the wellness centre is seen as a forward thinking step toward creating a more supportive and balanced campus environment.

Together, these initiatives reflect IIT Ropar’s broader vision of combining academic opportunity with holistic development, setting a meaningful example for educational institutions across the country.
