IITs introduce flexible exchange allowing students to study and transfer credits across campuses.
India’s premier engineering institutes are introducing a major academic reform. Starting this academic year, students of the Indian Institutes of Technology will be allowed to study at other IIT campuses and transfer the earned credits back to their home institute. This marks a big shift from the traditional system where students remained limited to one campus throughout their course.
Under the new framework, undergraduate students can opt for select courses, electives or even a semester at another IIT if it matches their academic interests. For example, if a specific campus offers a specialised subject or research opportunity not available at a student’s home institute, the student can now explore it.
The plan was discussed and recommended by the IIT Council, with a proposed cap of around five percent student exchange across campuses. Each IIT will still need internal approvals before full implementation, but the broader direction has already been set.
This reform aims to provide wider academic exposure and encourage collaboration among campuses. Students may gain access to different faculty expertise, research facilities and peer groups. It also mirrors global mobility systems seen in leading universities worldwide, but adapted to the Indian context.
For many students, this flexibility could open new academic doors. It may help them explore interdisciplinary learning and build networks beyond one campus. While administrative processes are still being streamlined, the move signals a more connected and dynamic IIT ecosystem in the years ahead.
