The number of Indian students travelling abroad for higher education has fallen significantly over the last two years, according to government data. The figures show a clear shift in the study abroad trend between 2023 and 2025.

In 2023, more than 9 lakh Indian students went overseas for higher studies. By 2024, the number had dropped to around 7.7 lakh. In 2025, it declined further to approximately 6.26 lakh. Overall, this marks a decrease of nearly 31 percent within just two years.

The data was shared in Parliament by Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar, highlighting how study patterns are gradually changing among Indian students.

Experts believe multiple reasons may be contributing to this decline. Rising tuition fees and living expenses in popular destinations such as the United States, United Kingdom and Canada have made overseas education more expensive. Visa regulations have also become stricter in certain countries, creating uncertainty for students and families.

At the same time, India’s own higher education landscape has been improving. New institutions, global collaborations, and expanded research opportunities are encouraging some students to pursue quality education within the country. Many families are now weighing financial costs more carefully before sending students abroad.

There is also a growing awareness about return on investment. Students today are thinking deeply about employability, long term career growth and financial stability before committing to international degrees.

While studying abroad continues to remain an aspiration for many, the recent numbers suggest that choices are becoming more cautious and calculated. The shift does not necessarily mean reduced ambition, but rather a more practical approach.

The coming years will show whether this trend continues or stabilizes. For now, it reflects an evolving mindset among Indian students navigating a changing global education environment.
