JMI's Professor Munna Khan Secures Patent for Revolutionary Healthcare Device

With great pride, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) announces that Professor Munna Khan of the Department of Electrical Engineering and his hardworking team have received a prestigious patent for their innovative invention, “Method and Apparatus for Analytical Characterization and Identification of Materials,” from the Government of India. With its innovative design, this cutting-edge tool has the potential to revolutionize the healthcare industry by effectively verifying the purity of materials in powder, liquid, and solid state.

The patent is a significant achievement for Professor Khan, marking his sixth patent in healthcare. His innovative work continues to make strides in the industry, further solidifying his reputation as a leading innovator. The newly patented device utilises advanced acoustic resonance technology to characterise and identify materials accurately. This method involves generating forced vibrations into the material using a V-shaped solid quartz strip with piezoelectric transducers, capturing the resulting acoustic signals, and analysing them through a machine-learning model. The device offers a simpler, more cost-effective, and safer alternative to traditional methods such as chromatography and laser emission, which often require complex instrumentation and pose risks due to harmful radiation.

Professor Mohammad Shakeel, the Officiating Vice Chancellor of JMI, congratulated Professor Khan and his team, expressing his pride in their achievement and wishing them continued success in their future endeavors. The team behind this breakthrough includes Dr Kashif I K Sherwani, Dr Md Qaiser Reza, Dr Shaila P S M A Sirdeshmukh, and Dr Ashok Kumar Salhan from the Department of Electrical Engineering, JMI, along with Dr Salhan, who has also served as Scientist G at the Defence Institute of Physiology and Sciences (DIPAS), DRDO.

This latest patent is not just an academic triumph, but also a significant step forward for the healthcare industry, which increasingly relies on innovations like Professor Khan’s to drive personalised medical solutions. The device’s ability to analyse materials without the need for sample preparation or exposure to harmful radiation makes it particularly valuable in clinical settings where precision and safety are paramount.

Professor Khan’s previous patents further highlight his contributions to healthcare technology. These include innovations in wound healing, therapeutic apparatuses for posture and balance, force measurement systems for masticatory muscles, and even a portable cotton ball plucking device. Each of these inventions has played a crucial role in advancing medical technology, with the potential for widespread application and commercialization.

The latest patent not only strengthens JMI’s intellectual property portfolio but also positions the university at the forefront of healthcare innovation. The institution looks forward to collaborating with industries to commercialise these technologies, ensuring that Professor Khan’s inventions reach the broader market and contribute to improved healthcare outcomes on a global scale.
