Clashes at JNU leave students and police injured as arrests rise amid protests.
The atmosphere at Jawaharlal Nehru University turned extremely tense this week after student protests escalated into direct clashes with Delhi Police. What began as a demonstration over administrative and policy related concerns slowly transformed into a chaotic confrontation that left several students and police officers injured. The campus, known for its long history of political activism, once again became the focus of national attention.
According to officials, at least 14 individuals linked to the JNU Students Union were arrested after the situation moved beyond control. Among those detained were prominent student leaders including former president Nitish Kumar and current office bearers such as Aditi Mishra, Gopika Babu, and Danish Ali. Authorities stated that protesters broke locks on university gates and attempted to march toward the Ministry of Education, which led to police intervention.
Police sources alleged that some protesters threw stones and other objects, resulting in injuries to security personnel present at the scene. In response, law enforcement used force to disperse the gathering and prevent further escalation. Students, however, strongly denied starting any violence and claimed that excessive force was used against them. They insisted that their protest was meant to remain peaceful but the situation suddenly intensified.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of shouting, pushing, and confusion as the clash unfolded. Videos circulating online show moments of confrontation, though each side continues to present a different version of how it all began. The unrest reportedly lasted for hours before relative calm returned to the campus.
Despite the incident, academic activities have continued, but many students say the environment feels emotionally heavy and unsettled. The university administration condemned the violence and warned that strict disciplinary measures may be taken against those found responsible.
The episode has once again raised broader questions about student activism, democratic rights, and how institutions manage dissent. As investigations move forward, many hope dialogue will replace confrontation, because tensions like these tend to leave deeper marks than expected.
