JNU Sets Up Panel To Explore Feasibility Of Conducting PhD Entrance

A committee has been formed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to assess the feasibility of administering internal entrance examinations for PhD admissions in labor studies, Korean language, and arts and aesthetics.

According to authorities on Tuesday, the institution would have to look at other options for admissions because these topics are not included by the institution Grants Commission's (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET).

The action is probably a one-time fix meant to fill the void created by these topics' exclusion from the NET framework. Prospective students are concerned because there is ambiguity around admittance for these programs, especially since the current admission cycle is scheduled to end on December 4.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has held its first meeting to discuss a solution to the admissions process, which has faced delays due to alleged irregularities in centrally conducted exams like UGC-NET JRF and CUET. The university is considering reinstating in-house exams, but this raises logistical and financial concerns due to limited resources and time constraints. The university could petition the UGC to add these subjects to the NET list, but this process is lengthy and may further delay admissions.

Another option is to admit candidates through the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) programme, but this would exclude applicants who qualify solely through NET or are non-NET candidates. With no clear resolution in sight, officials acknowledge the possibility of extending the admission cycle beyond December 4.

The committee will soon decide whether to proceed with in-house exams or request UGC's intervention, but either option could delay the process further.
