Students raise voices against rustication orders and demand fairness and campus democratic rights

A major protest has taken place inside Jawaharlal Nehru University after members of the student union gathered to oppose rustication orders issued by the administration. The protest started when several elected student leaders were banned from campus for multiple semesters and were also fined following alleged disciplinary matters. Many students believe the punishment is too harsh and unfair.

The issue reportedly began after a protest at the university library last year turned tense and authorities claimed damage had happened. Following an inquiry, some student representatives were rusticated for two semesters and were asked to pay fines up to twenty thousand rupees. Student leaders have described these actions as extreme and said it affects democratic functioning of the campus.

During the protest, students assembled inside the university premises holding posters and raising slogans. They demanded that the rustication orders be withdrawn and that proper dialogue should take place between the administration and the student body. Many participants said universities are meant to be spaces of debate and discussion, not fear and punishment.

Several student groups and political organisations also expressed support for the protesting students. They argued that disciplinary action should be balanced and transparent. According to protesters, imposing long suspensions without broader consultation creates distrust between students and authorities.

Some students also mentioned other concerns on campus including increased monitoring measures and restrictions, which they feel are limiting open expression. They believe these developments together have created frustration among many sections of the student community.

Meanwhile, the university administration has maintained that the action was taken after due process and investigation. Officials say maintaining discipline and safety inside the campus is necessary. However, protesting students insist that discipline should not silence voices or discourage peaceful dissent.

With emotions running high, students have indicated that protests may continue until their demands are heard. The situation has once again highlighted the long standing debate over campus autonomy, student rights and administrative authority in higher education institutions.
