Karnataka Introduces 15% NRI

Taking an important policy change in medical education, the Karnataka government has announced that 15% NRI quota will be implemented in state government medical colleges from 2025–26 academic year. The step has been taken by the National Medical Commission (NMC) after approving 450 additional MBBS seats for the state, which is part of NEET UG counselling.

Under the new seat matrix, eight colleges will get 50 additional seats in each. These include institutions in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Raichur, and Vijayanagara. The special thing is that 15% of these new seats (about 8 per college) will be reserved under the NRI Kota category, whose fees have been fixed at Rs 25 lakh per seat.

Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash R. Patil said that this decision will not only meet the increasing demand for medical seats but will also reduce the dependence on the state by strengthening the financial stability of government colleges.

With the joining of these new seats, the total number of medical seats in Karnataka has now increased from 9,263 to 9,663. This will provide more opportunities to eligible candidates and also target NRI candidates.

However, this NRI Kota has also started a debate. Critics say that this is a step towards commercialization and unequal access to education. At the same time, supporters believe that the increase in seats will benefit meritorious students who cannot bear the high fees of private colleges, and at the same time the sources of revenue for state -run institutions will be diverse.

As counselling is moving forward, both local and NRI candidates can consider their options in view of these new provisions. This policy shows how Karnataka wants to maintain a financial balance by expanding access to medical education.
