Education Ministry and IRF India launch mission to curb child deaths near school zones.
With over 12,000 children losing their lives annually in school-adjacent road zones, the International Road Federation India Chapter (IRF India) and the Ministry of Education have joined hands to launch a sweeping initiative the National Road Safety Mission for Schools (NRSM) aimed at building safer mobility practices around educational institutions.
At the launch, Anu Jain, Director in the Education Ministry, highlighted the urgent need: school zones are no longer just places of learning, but also sites of risk for young lives. The mission seeks to instil a culture of responsible road use from early ages, turning every school journey into a safer one.
Some of the planned activities include: audits of school-zone safety under recognised standards, advocating for a uniform road-safety syllabus in schools, and engaging children with creative tools like plays, quizzes, drawings and stories to make safety part of their everyday mindset.
What this means: when folded into school programmes, this initiative could shift how young students perceive traffic rules from external imposition into internalised practice. And when children carry that into families and communities, the ripple effect could be large.
For school administrators and parents, the advice is clear: engage actively, partner with such programmes, monitor your own school zone for safe crossings, footpaths and signage, and make safety a shared responsibility. The mission is an opportunity to transform school environments beyond academics into secure mobility spaces.
