A renewed focus on student-centred quality learning in Meghalaya.
Meghalaya Puts Children First

In a clear and inspiring address, Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, reaffirmed that education remains the top priority for his government. Speaking at the inauguration of a new college in Sohra, he acknowledged the persistent structural challenges in the education sector despite considerable spending, complexity and infrastructure deficits have hindered the desired quality of learning.

He emphasised a child-centric approach, urging schools, teachers and managing committees alike to place students at the heart of every decision. As he put it: “Let the student be the guiding force not just what benefits teachers or institutions, but what truly serves the child.”

The event also highlighted the role of the Ramakrishna Mission in shaping holistic education in the state. Sangma praised the Mission’s commitment to building disciplined, empathetic citizens with strong values. He further pledged that infrastructure challenges such as road connectivity, electricity and water supply to mission schools would be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

This clear articulation of priorities reflects the government’s recognition that human capital is its greatest investment. Sangma’s appeal underscores that better learning outcomes and improved quality must go hand-in-hand with systemic reform.

For Meghalaya, this means continued efforts to rationalise schools, streamline the education system and match infrastructure to aspirations with students firmly front and centre. If realised, the shift from repair to renewal could mark a turning point in the state’s journey towards inclusive and high-quality education.
