The Ministry of Education, Government of India, IIT Madras, and MoEVT Zanzibar- Tanzania signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of an IIT campus in Zanzibar- Tanzania. This marks the first IIT campus outside India, reflecting India's long-standing friendship with Tanzania and its focus on building people-to-people ties across Africa and the Global South. “IIT Madras- Zanzibar campus marks a historic beginning towards internationalization of higher education” - Shri Dharmendra Pradhan.

An important milestone in the internationalization of higher education was the announcement of the Memorandum of Understanding for the IIT Madras-Zanzibar campus by the Union Minister for Education, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship Shri Dharmendra Pradhan. The program seeks to develop people-to-people ties with Africa while also advancing global good. The National Education Policy 2020 strongly emphasizes internationalization and encourages successful Indian universities to open campuses abroad.
Recognising Tanzania and India's strategic partnership, the educational partnership relationship has been formalized by signing the document that provides the framework for the Parties to detail out the establishment of the proposed campus of IIT Madras in Zanzibar- Tanzania, with plans to launch programs in October 2023.
In order to meet the region's present demands, the IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, will provide top-tier educational competence to a prominent location in Africa. The university will oversee academic programs, curriculum, student selection, and pedagogical aspects, with capital and running costs being covered by the government of Zanzibar-Tanzania.
The university will draw a variety of students from Tanzania and other nations, and Indian students are also welcome. The establishment will improve India's standing abroad, diplomatic ties, and global influence. The IIT campus seeks to promote the aspirational aspects of Indian higher education and innovation while strengthening relationships with the community and supporting research and innovation in the area.
