Bharatiya Janata Party's Droupadi Murmu was elected as the 15th president of India on Thursday as the counting of votes concluded. She successfully defeated the opposition, Yashwant Sinha. With this win, Murmu became the first tribal woman and the second woman to hold the honoured position. Murmu is also the first President to be born after independence and is the youngest to occupy the top post.
Murmu, 64, won by an overwhelming margin against Sinha after receiving over 64 percent valid votes in a day-long counting of ballots of MPs and MLAs, comprising the electoral college, to succeed Ram Nath Kovid to become the country's 15th president.

Murmu, 64, is the first Adivasi and second woman to become the nation’s First Citizen and the Supreme Commander of India’s Armed Forces. Murmu was elected to two terms in the Odisha Assembly in 2000 and 2004, and served as a Minister from 2000 to 2004 in Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's BJD-BJP coalition government. She was sworn in as the first woman Governor of Jharkhand in 2015.
