An official notification issued by the Ministry of Education states that President Droupadi Murmu appointed JNU professor Mazhar Asif as Jamia Millia Islamia’s vice-chancellor on Thursday.

“I am directed to convey that in exercise of powers conferred under statutes of Jamia Millia Islamia Act, 1988, the President of India, in her capacity as the Visitor of JMI, has been pleased to appoint Prof Mazhar Asif, School of Languages, JNU, New Delhi as the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia for five years from the date on which he enters office or until he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier,” reads the notification.

Mazhar Asif is professor at the Centre of Persian and Central Asian Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU’s) School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies. An author of several books and articles, his key areas of specialization include Indian Knowledge System (IKS), Sufism & Mysticism. A multilingual academic, Prof Asif knows several languages such as Assamese, Bhojpuri, English, Hindi, Persian, Urdu, and Vajjika.

Earlier, a search committee was set up to select JMI’s VC, and interviews for the right candidate were conducted between February 26 and 27. Post the Education Ministry’s decision on the candidate, as per the norms, its recommendation was sent to the Visitor for final approval. As per the University Grants Commission Regulations, 2018, the VC of a University, is appointed by the Visitor/Chancellor from a panel of three to five names recommended by the duly constituted search-cum-selection committee. The Visitor has the right to call for a set of fresh names in case of dissatisfaction with the panel’s decision.
