Professor Naima Khatoon has been appointed as the first-ever woman vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) for a period of 5 years,


She became the first woman VC in the history of 123-year-old university. With this AMU became the third central university to get its first women VC, after Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University.

“I am directed to refer to the subject mentioned above and to state that in exercise of powers conferred under Clause 2(1) of the Statutes of Aligarh Muslim University, Act, 1920, the President of lndia, in her capacity as the Visitor of AMU, has been pleased to appoint Prof. Naima Khatoon, Professor/Principal, Women's College, as the Vice-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University for a period of five (5) years from the date on which she enters upon his office or the date on which she completes seventy years of age, whichever is earlier,” states a letter from P Saxena, Under Secretary, Government of India.

The Ministry had also sought Election Commission’s permission before announcing Prof Khatoon’s appointment. “It may be stated that the Election Commission of India vide their letter dated 09.04.2024 (copy enclosed) has stated that the Commission has no objection, from Model Code of Conduct (MCC) angle, to the proposal related to appointment of Vice-Chancellor, AMU subject to the condition that no publicity shall be there and no political mileage may be derived from it,” adds the official notice.

Prof Khatoon served as professor and chairperson of the Department of Psychology before joining as Principal, Women's College in July 2014. She was Professor since July 2006, associate professor since April 1998 and lecturer since August 1988.

She also taught in the National University of Rwanda, Central Africa for one academic year. Prof Khatoon, a PhD in Political Psychology, has worked at Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi and Aligarh Muslim University. She is presently appointed as director, Centre for Skill Development & Career Planning, AMU, Aligarh since Oct, 2015. She has attended and presented papers in numerous National & International conferences. She has also visited and delivered lectures in the University of LouisVille, USA, University of Alba Lulia, Romania, Chulalongkorn University Bangkok, Hollings Centre, Istanbul, Turkey and Hollings Centre for International Dialogue, Boston, USA.
