Students Unite as Tezpur University Shuts

Tezpur University in Assam is witnessing one of the most intense student movements in its history, as learners have shut down the campus indefinitely. The agitation, led by the Tezpur University United Forum (TUUF), demands the removal of Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh over allegations of administrative negligence, corruption, and a prolonged absence from campus. According to students and faculty members, this crisis had been building for months, but the administration’s inaction finally pushed the situation beyond control.

Students allege that the vice-chancellor has been away for nearly three months without providing clarity or accountability. What began as scattered concerns soon turned into a strong united movement as students, teachers, and non-teaching staff joined hands. The end-term examinations, academic schedules, and daily functioning have come to a complete halt. Hostel residents, faculty offices, and even administrative blocks stand locked as the protest continues.

The demand is straightforward but firm: the VC must be removed, and the enquiry reports from the Ministry of Education’s fact-finding committee must be released publicly. According to student leaders, the committee visited the campus but failed to provide transparency, further eroding trust. The delay in decisive action has left students frustrated and worried about their academic future. Many final-year students are especially anxious, as placement schedules and project submissions now face uncertainty.

University teachers have also expressed their disappointment, stating that the academic environment has deteriorated drastically over the past year. The Tezpur University Teachers’ Association (TUTA) has extended support, making this not just a student protest, but a campus-wide movement demanding accountability and leadership.

For a central university once known for its peaceful environment and strong academic culture, this shutdown marks an unprecedented moment. Students say they will not reopen the campus until their concerns are addressed directly by the higher authorities. Meanwhile, parents and guardians are urging the government to step in before the academic loss becomes irreversible.

As the situation intensifies, the ball now lies in the Ministry of Education's court. The future of thousands of students depends on whether transparent and prompt action is taken something the campus community has been desperately waiting for.
