Suicide by students increases due to exam stress: NCRB Reports

As per the reports of the National Crime Records Bureau, the number of deaths by suicide by students saw an increase of 4.5 percent in 2021.

New Delhi: The latest data provided by the National Crime Records Bureau shows that the number of deaths by suicide by students saw an increase of 4.5 percent in 2021. Maharashtra had the highest student deaths by suicide in 2021 with 1,834 deaths, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 1,308, and Tamil Nadu with 1,246 deaths. The NCRB Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI) Report 2021 showed that student suicides rose dramatically during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021 and have been rising steadily in the past five years.

In 2020, as many as 12,526 students died by suicide, while in 2021 the number rose to 13,089 students. Between 2017 and 2019, student suicides made up 7.40 percent to 7.60 percent of the country’s total suicides. This rose to 8.20 percent in 2020 and only slightly decreased to 8 percent in 2021.

Since 2017, the student death rate by suicide has increased by 32.15 percent. The total number of student suicides in 2017 was 9,905.

The report also showed that the suicide rate of female students was low for five years at 43.49 percent, while male suicides constituted 56.51 percent of the total male suicides. In 2017, 4,711 female students committed suicide, while in 2021 these deaths rose to 5,693.

The NCRB report also showed the educational status of suicide victims and stated that “only 4.6% of all suicide victims are graduates and above.” About 11 percent of the victims were illiterate, while 15.8 percent had their education up to the primary level, according to the National Refugee Council report.

The number of deaths by suicide in India increased – by 7.2 percent from 2020 – with as many as 1,64,033 people dying by suicide in 2021, according to the report.
