The University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched a transformational research internship scheme for fourth-year undergraduate students. The program, which is intended to give students with a comprehensive learning experience, includes stipends, health coverage, and academic credits, representing a significant step toward increasing practical exposure and employability.
Students who intern with partner firms will now be eligible for set stipends, insurance coverage, and academic credits, according to the recently released standards. This comprehensive strategy strives to motivate students while also bridging the gap between academic understanding and real-world application.
Recognizing the importance of developing collaboration between educational institutions and companies, the UGC requires the appointment of nodal officials. These officials are responsible for supervising research internships, creating partnerships with firms, and supporting cooperative research initiatives.
INTERNSHIP PROJECTS
In alignment with the National Education Policy 2020 focus on mandatory internships, educational institutions are encouraged to conduct surveys to identify local market needs. This proactive approach ensures that internship projects are tailored to align with the dynamic demands of the industry, enhancing students' readiness for professional roles.
Students embarking on a research internship in their fourth year will benefit from dedicated supervision. The appointment of internship supervisors ensures that students receive guidance throughout their projects, promoting timely completion and a comprehensive understanding of their research topics.
To increase transparency, educational institutions must provide extensive information regarding internship programs and mentors. This transparency not only informs students, but also lays the groundwork for accountability and quality assurance in the internship program.
Taking a forward-thinking strategy, the UGC proposes the formation of clusters of state-level institutions, colleges, and enterprises. These clusters are intended to support collaborative research efforts and enhance information sharing among diverse stakeholders.
M Jagadesh Kumar, UGC Chairperson, emphasizes the necessity of digital integration in executing these principles. Educational institutions are encouraged to establish portals that integrate APIs, allowing specialists from organizations or agencies to register easily. This step enhances the efficiency and success of the internship programme, creating a symbiotic relationship between academia and industry.
