UPSC Gets New Chairperson: Preeti Sudan, Former Health Secretary

Preeti Sudan, former union health secretary, has been appointed head of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). She will take up the position on August 1, 2024.

Sudan will replace Manoj Soni, who resigned for "personal reasons" before the conclusion of his tenure, and will serve until August 2025.

Sudan was a 1983 batch Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer from the Karnataka cadre who also served as the union's food secretary.

Sudan is the UPSC's second woman chairperson. Prior to her, RM Bathew served as chairperson in 1996.

Sudan has played an important part in numerous national-level projects, including the introduction and implementation of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and Ayushman Bharat, the ban on e-cigarettes, and legislation establishing a national medical commission, among others.

Sudan played an important part in the Covid-19 pandemic while she was the union health secretary till 2020. She also served as the Department of Food and Public Distribution's secretary. Sudan has also worked in the Women and Child Development and Defense Ministry.

Sudan has held positions as head of the Global Digital Health Partnership, vice chair of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health, chair of COP-8 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, and member of the WHO's Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response.
