What CBSE Needs

With the 2026 board examinations around the side, CBSE has cleared what students need to do beyond just studying hard to be require for Class 10 & 12 exams. These needs are important for students, parents, and schools to assure.

First, attendance: You need at least 75% attendance over the two-year period (Classes 9-10 for the 10th exam, Classes 11-12 for the 12th). Without that, you will not be permitted.

Then there’s internal assessment. Under NEP 2020, it is optional which continuous over the two years. If you miss school often or don’t complete assessments properly, you may face consequences: your result might be delayed, or you could fall into what CBSE calls the “Essential Repeat” category.

Subject offerings matter too. Students in Class 10 may pick up to two extra subjects beyond the five compulsory ones. For Class 12, only one additional subject is allowed. But schools must have necessary approvals and resources (like labs, qualified teachers) to offer those subjects; otherwise, students can’t choose them.

Also, only students fulfilling all these conditions attendance, subject eligibility, continuous internal assessment will be able to appear in the board exams, whether their main subjects or additional ones. If in prior years you were in a “Compartment” or “Essential Repeat” status, there are provisions to appear as a private candidate in those specific subjects.

In short, meeting these rules is just as important as preparing for the academic content. If you are a student or parent, check with your school now to make sure everything is in order well before exam submission deadlines. Don’t leave these eligibility criteria to the last minute.
