A heated meeting, conflicting versions DUSU leaders slap ignites debate on campus conduct.
In a dramatic turn of events at Delhi University’s Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, DUSU joint secretary and ABVP’s Deepika Jha reportedly slapped professor Sujit Kumar during a disciplinary meeting. The confrontation, captured on camera and witnessed by police officials present, has escalated tensions and triggered a formal inquiry.
According to Jha, the incident was not premeditated. She claimed that during the meeting, she noticed the professor “smirking” and staring at her, which made her uncomfortable. She says she raised concerns about him smoking publicly, after which he allegedly verbally abused her. She says this abusive reaction provoked her to act, though she regrets losing control. “I felt angry and raised my hand,” she told, while also releasing a video apology saying she never wanted to hurt anyone’s dignity.
Professor Kumar, however, strongly rejects her version. He alleges that ABVP members entered the meeting uninvited, creating a hostile environment. He contends that Jha struck him after the meeting erupted over how his office handled disciplinary action against certain students. He also claims pressure was placed on him to resign earlier and that his suspension of ABVP-affiliated students had aggravated tensions.
The 32-second video available from CCTV footage shows the professor seated and Jha rising from her chair before the reported slap. A female cop intervenes, moving Jha away, while others attempt to push Professor Kumar back into place. However, the authenticity and context of what’s happening before and after remain unclear.
In response, Delhi University has constituted a six-member inquiry committee, led by zoologist Prof. Neeta Sehgal, to submit its report within two weeks. The university’s vice-chancellor, Yogesh Singh, has demanded a fact-based inquiry. Teachers and student groups have also reacted forcefully: the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) protested on campus, and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) demanded accountability.
This incident has raised serious questions about discipline, power dynamics, and student conduct in academic settings. Are political affiliations coloring campus conflicts? Does the incident reflect broader tensions of authority, gender, and decorum? Whatever the final verdict, the event has already stirred intense debate about boundaries and about how institutions handle emotionally charged confrontations.
