Assam professor Atanu Nath won 2026 Breakthrough Prize for major contribution in physics experiment.
Assam has received a proud moment as Dr. Atanu Nath, an assistant professor of physics, has won the 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, one of the world’s most respected science honours often called the “Oscars of Science.”
Dr. Atanu Nath, who teaches at Tihu College in Assam’s Nalbari district, received this global recognition for his contribution to the Muon g-2 experiment. This major international research project was carried out with scientists working at CERN, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Fermilab.
He shared the award with 376 scientists from different countries, including 11 researchers from India, who were all part of the same physics collaboration.
The Muon g-2 experiment is considered an important study in modern physics because it helps scientists understand hidden mysteries of particles and the universe in a better way.
Reacting to the honour, Dr. Atanu Nath said he feels proud and happy to represent Assam and India on the global scientific stage. He also encouraged young students to choose scientific research as a career instead of only running after conventional jobs.
Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Dr. Nath and said the achievement has brought pride to the entire state. Assam minister Atul Bora also praised him and called it a major honour for Assam.
Dr. Atanu Nath’s success is being seen as a strong example of how Indian scientists are making their mark in world-level research and bringing international recognition to the country.
