CBSE grace marks explained

Central Board of Secondary Education Grace Marks Scheme: The Central Board of Secondary Education is expected to declare the Class 12 results soon, likely by the last week of April 2026. To pass, students must secure at least 33% marks. Those who fall short by a small margin may receive grace marks to help them qualify. The Class 10 results were declared on April 15, 2026.

Passing Criteria

Students must obtain a minimum of 33% marks in each subject at both Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) levels. For Class 12 subjects with practicals, students must secure 33% separately in theory and practical components, along with 33% overall in that subject.

Who Gets Grace Marks and Why?

As per CBSE rules, grace marks may be awarded to students who miss the passing mark by one or two marks. In certain cases, compensatory marks are also given if there are issues such as printing errors, incorrect questions, or ambiguity in the paper. Grace marks may also be considered when a paper is unusually difficult or includes questions outside the syllabus.

Grading System

Central Board of Secondary Education follows a relative grading system for successful candidates based on rank order:

  • A1: Top one-eighth of students
  • A2: Next one-eighth
  • B1: Next one-eighth
  • B2: Next one-eighth
  • C1: Next one-eighth
  • C2: Next one-eighth
  • D1: Next one-eighth
  • D2: Next one-eighth
  • E: Fail

Exam Statistics

More than 43 lakh students appeared for the 2026 board examinations, including around 25 lakh for Class 10 and 18.5 lakh for Class 12, conducted across thousands of centres in India.
