Delhi Schools Remain Closed Until January 12

Due to severe cold weather conditions in Delhi, schools for children from nursery to Class 5 will remain closed for the next five days, according to Education M

Due to the frigid weather conditions in the national capital, Delhi schools will be closed for the next five days (till January 12) for kids from nursery to Class 5, Education Minister Atishi said on Sunday. This applies to government schools, government-aided institutions, and recognized private schools.

In a post on X, Atishi said, "Schools in Delhi will remain closed for the next five days due to the prevailing cold weather conditions, for students from nursery to Class 5."

Students of primary classes are expected to return to their schools from January 15, an order from the Director of Education, Delhi read. Schools may organise online classes for their respective students of primary classes, the order said.

However, children in grades 6 through 12 will return to school following the Christmas break. However, due to the cold temperatures, no school will begin before 8 a.m., and lessons will end after 5 p.m.

Schools in Delhi have been closed for winter vacation since January 1, with courses scheduled to resume on Monday, January 8.

On Saturday, the Delhi government issued an order to extend the winter holiday till January 10. However, hours later, the Directorate of Education withdrew the directive, claiming that it was "incorrectly issued". Officials said a decision on whether to reopen schools despite the chilly weather will be made on Sunday.

For the past several days, Delhi and its neighboring states have had chilly to severe cold days, with maximum temperatures dropping below average due to a layer of fog blocking out sunlight.

In its daily forecast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, "Cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely to continue in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Rajasthan during the next two days and significantly decrease thereafter."

According to the IMD, the highest temperature in the national capital on Saturday was 15.2 degrees Celsius, four notches below average. The lowest temperature on Sunday morning was 8.2 degrees Celsius, which is one degree above usual.

The weatherman predicts thin fog, with maximum and lowest temperatures settling at 16 and 8 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Gautam Buddh Nagar district government directed that all institutions in Noida and Greater Noida provide children up to Class 8 breaks until January 14.
