New Delhi: Education Ministry has announced that they will develop courses for the students of Class 10 and 12 following the ‘Agnipath’ Scheme that was launched by the Ministry of Defense (MoD) on June 14, this week.

Under this new scheme named ‘Agnipath’ meaning ‘Path Of Fire’, youth aged between 17.5 and 21 years will be recruited as soldiers in the armed forces for a period of four years, with only a quarter retained for longer periods. Consequently, Class 10 or Class 12 is the minimum eligibility criterion, as stated in the press statement issued by the Education Ministry.

The Education Ministry said that the courses for the Class 10 and +2 students will be developed by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in consultation with the MoD. This special program will facilitate enrolment, development of courses, provision of self-learning material, student support, accreditation of study centres, evaluation and certification.

The Education Ministry stated in the press statement, “The special programme will enable those ‘Agniveers’ who are 10th Class pass to further their education and obtain a 12th Class pass certificate by developing customised courses that are not only current but very relevant to their area of service.”

The students who complete the stated tenure of ‘Agnipath’ scheme will be termed as ‘Agniveers’. The certificates issued to them will be recognized for both employment and higher education purposes across the country. The press statement further stated, “The move will allow the recruits to gain adequate educational qualifications and skills to take up productive roles in society later in life."

Education Minister of India Dharmendra Pradhan took to Twitter to hail the ‘Agnipath’ scheme. “The customized program by NIOS will be relevant to the spirit of Agnipath scheme. This certificate will equip Agniveers with relevant knowledge and skills and enable them to pursue jobs and higher education across India,” he wrote on Twitter.
