Government committee to examine student suicides, campus stress factors, and mental health systems at IIT Kanpur.

The Ministry of Education has constituted a three-member committee to review recent student suicide cases at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, following growing concern over mental health challenges in higher education institutions.

The decision comes after several tragic incidents on the campus, including the recent death of a 25-year-old doctoral scholar. These events have sparked nationwide discussions about academic stress, emotional isolation, and the adequacy of mental health support available to students at elite institutions.

The committee is headed by Professor Anil D Sahasrabudhe, chairperson of the National Educational Technology Forum. He is joined by senior psychiatrist Dr Jitendra Nagpal and a senior official from the Ministry of Education. The panel brings together expertise in policy, psychology, and academic administration.

According to officials, the committee has been given fifteen days to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and evaluate the effectiveness of the institute’s mental health framework. This includes reviewing counselling services, student grievance mechanisms, faculty mentorship systems, and peer-support structures.

The panel will also assess how well IIT Kanpur has implemented the national guidelines for emotional and mental wellbeing issued in 2023. These guidelines were introduced to ensure that universities create supportive environments and identify students in distress at early stages.

Mental health professionals have long warned that competitive academic environments can intensify feelings of failure, loneliness, and burnout. At institutions like the IITs, pressure related to research output, grades, funding, and career prospects often compounds emotional strain.

Student groups across the country have welcomed the government’s intervention, stating that systemic issues must be addressed rather than treating each incident as an isolated tragedy. They have called for increased counsellor availability, confidential support systems, and stronger anti-harassment policies.

Parents and faculty members have also expressed hope that the review will lead to meaningful reform. Many believe that regular mental health check-ins, sensitization programs, and reduced stigma around seeking help are urgently needed.

While no single measure can entirely prevent such incidents, education officials stress that early intervention and accessible support can significantly reduce risk. The findings of the committee are expected to guide future reforms not only at IIT Kanpur but across all higher education institutions in India.

The review marks an important step toward acknowledging that academic excellence must go hand in hand with student wellbeing, compassion, and institutional responsibility.
