India introduces a one-year B.Ed course from 2026–27 to streamline teacher education nationwide.
The Indian government has officially announced reintroduction of a one-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) program, which will start from the 2026–27 academic session, according to National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) notification dated August 25, 2025. This move is in line with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, trying to make teacher training more fast and providing a quicker pathway for candidates who already holds four-year undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
The one-year B.Ed program will replace the old two-year course and will be offered across universities and recognized teacher education institutions. The curriculum is made to balance theoretical knowledge, practical teaching experience and pedagogical skills. Compulsory internships and classroom teaching practices will be a big part of the program to make sure candidates are prepared for real world teaching environments.
Eligibility requires candidates to complete four-year undergraduate or postgraduate degree. Institutions offering the one-year B.Ed must follow updated NCTE regulations, including strict recognition rules, to maintain quality standards. Online-only programs will not allowed, as the focus is on in-person learning and hands-on experience.
Government also clarified transition plan for existing two-year B.Ed courses, allowing institutions time to adjust new structure. Authorities emphasizes the reform is aimed to improve teacher quality, make teacher education more efficient and ensuring India can meet growing demand for trained educators in schools across country.
Experts believes this one-year fast-track program will reduce time needed for aspiring teachers to enter the profession while still keeping high educational standards. The reform expected to improve overall quality of school education and support country’s broader educational goals under NEP 2020.
For full details, the official notification can be accessed on NCTE website.
